Tropical Patio - One Room Challenge Week 1

Brace yourselves — Beauteeful Living is diving into another “6 Week Short Makeover” and you’re all invited to witness the mayhem! In all seriousness, I’m thrilled to be a guest participant in the spring edition of the One Room Challenge (ORC), hosted by Linda of Calling It Home. While I’ve done 2 ORC makeovers in the past (both fall editions), this will be my first time participating during the spring.

This time around I’m not making over any bedrooms. It’s all about our outdoor patio deck for this challenge. Insert nervous face. As excited as I am to get cranking on this project, I’m also chewing my nails. Not only is spring an extra busy time of year for me, the success of this project is very much dependent on Mother Nature cooperating! It does involve an outdoor space, after all. I don’t know about you but my “rain, rain go away” dances have not been very effective in the past. 🙁

But…there’s no turning back on this makeover because I’m determined to fulfill 2 MAIN GOALS:

1) Increase privacy in my upper patio deck.
2) Create a resort-like feel to outdoor dining area.

Okay…here comes our patio deck photos.

Stepping outside our dining room, you will walk out to this view of our pergola (shade is currently off). While I love that we can see our pool from our wood deck, there’s very little privacy in this area. The arborvitaes near the back fence will take at least another 5 years before they reach a good height.

Patio Makeover - Before Photo

A year ago, we extended our wood deck so that there’s a little cut out for our grill. It’s such a small change but by doing so, we’re able to set up another dining table in front of the grill. We do love to entertain! 🙂

The photo below will give you a better idea of how the pergola looks with the screen cover on. We’ll place the cover back in a couple of weeks.

Patio Inspiration Photos

You’ll notice that my inspiration photos for this makeover center around tropical and Moroccan motifs. I’m forever dreaming of lazy days, soaking up sun in a place surrounded by lush greenery. Since I’m nowhere near the Carribbean, the next best thing is to recreate the look in my own backyard! And when it comes to decor, I just LOVE the vibrant colors and intricate geometric patterns that you often find in Moroccan decor.

In a nutshell…

I’m looking to revamp our patio deck into an outdoor dining oasis, utilizing tropical greenery and Moroccan decor elements.

Here are the main “To Do’s” for this challenge:

1. Powerwash entire deck and repaint floor boards.
2. Reinforce pergola nuts and bolts and spray paint any spots showing rust.
3. Repaint/upcycle bamboo chairs
4. String outdoor lights around pergola
5. Redo planters around wood deck
6. Lots of shopping!!
– Outdoor curtains (84 inch length)
– Outdoor rug (6’x9′ size)
– Dining set (seating 6)
– Tropical plants (lots of them!)
– Outdoor decor (hanging lanterns, outdoor pillows, tableware, grill cover, candle holders, etc.)

Wish me luck with pulling this all together! If this is your first time visiting Beauteeful Living, please check out my 2 prior One Room Challenge makeovers:
