I did it! I sewed my first pillow cover…an envelope pillow cover, to be exact. As I’ve stated in a previous post (link here), I’m inspired to do more crafts this year. While I’ve been doing crafts for as long as I can remember, none of these crafts have involved a sewing machine. An inspiration for getting my 1st sewing project started is Elegance & Enchantment’s Creative Challenge 2015. Michelle at Elegance & Enchantment is one of the wonderful bloggers I follow. She recently challenged her readers to completing 12 months of creative projects! For the first challenge, readers can choose from crocheting, knitting, sewing, weaving, embroidery or quilting.
I chose sewing because this year, I was determined to become good buddies with Ms. Sewing Machine. She held the key to so many possibilities with my home decor planning. As a good beginner’s project, I thought I’d start off with making a pillow cover. Since I’m that nut lady who is constantly buying pillows, this project is as fun as it is practical.
Before you read any further, I think you should know that this is not a tutorial post. There are tons online. When working on this project (with the guidance of a crafty friend), I wanted to learn this sewing project without distractions. I didn’t want to stop every 2 minutes to document every step. Once sewing a pillow becomes second nature, I plan to create a tutorial here on the blog. 🙂
Now…on to my non-tutorial post:
While perusing through fabric, I could not help but gravitate to the 3 swatches pictured below. I am such a sucker for geometric patterns! It was so hard for me to choose between these 3 color choices. After mulling around for 20 minutes, I ultimately chose the cheery light blue fabric in the middle.
I couldn’t help but get a little excited about pinning the fabric and prepping it for sewing.
Here’s how the back of the pillow looks. Envelope pillow covers are great because you can take the covers off for washing and it eliminates the need for zippers. With zippers, you know it’s only a matter of time before they get stuck!
Here’s how the newest pillow addition looks against my store bought pillows. I think she’s holding up quite well. Don’t you think? 😉
Now that I’ve completed my first project using a sewing machine, I am so pumped to work on the next! Before I get to the next project, I have some good news for my E–MAIL subscribers. I am sewing another pillow cover for one of you! In celebration of Beauteeful Living’s upcoming 1 year anniversary (March 20th), I will be giving away a few things (via raffle to my Email subscribers). One of them is a replica of the pillow cover I shared today. I will be notifying the winner via e-mail after March 20, 2015.

Sounds like a plan, Angela. Thanks for the compliment! 🙂
Wow great job! I do not get along with my sewing machine, unfortunately, but I really wish I did! I might have to pull it out and try again.
You should, Miranda :). Thanks for commenting!
I didn’t really want a tutorial. I will just admire your pretty pillows.
Thanks everyone for all your wonderful comments! I always read each and every one. Love, Tee
Love how your envelope pillow came out! So pretty! Love the blue color!
Love it! That looks so nice. 🙂 I need to give it a try for a few pillows that need a new makeover.
That turned out so good! I have been meaning to make pillow covers for my pillows to bring some color to our apartment but I haven’t gotten around to it!
Envelope pillow cases are my salvation! Practically every decorative pillow in our home has one. Cute fabric!

You did a real good job! Which sewing machine did you use? I was contemplating which sewing machine to buy because one of my new year resolutions is to learn to sew and start a project.
Sandy
Thanks so much, Sandy! I used a friend’s machine. Here’s a very in-depth post I found online during my search for the best beginner’s sewing machine (I’m looking to buy my own too!) http://thesweethome.com/reviews/best-sewing-machine-for-beginners/
Very cool! I love that fabric especially!
This is how I make my pillow covers too! That fabric is gorgeous!
An amazing job for a first sewing project! I love sewing! For free patterns, please check out my blog! http://xoxograndma.blogspot.com/
Thanks so much for the kind words and for sharing your blog, Joy.
Looks great. I might attempt this. I have a bunch of fabric from my travels to ghana, thailand and mozambique that would be served well as pillows.
Oooh — sounds like you’ve got some beautiful fabric to work with! Thanks for commenting, Sojourner.
You did an awesome job! It came out great.
You did a great job, I am loving that pattern and color. I need to get better with sewing too, my husband actually is the one that sewed our curtains because I could not sew a straight line. I can do a lot of crafty stuff but sewing is hard for me. That is exciting your one year is coming up! It has gone so fast.
Thanks so much, Emily! Yes, a year is almost here & it feels like it went like a flash. You & your husband make such a great team! Love it 🙂
